Volunteer Position Available!

The Bird Center of Washtenaw County is looking for experienced volunteer help for the 2019 season!

A normal busy day at the bird center consists of feeding and cleaning birds, examining birds, doing intakes and computer data, answering calls, and so much more! To help out the supervisors and interns this season, we are looking for a volunteer that would like to do a little extra work or a little something different. This position is good for someone that doesn’t want to just feed, clean, or wash dirty dishes! Or this position is for someone that may need to sit more or is just good with computers and/or people.

We pride ourselves for taking over 2,500 phone calls a season. We don’t let the machine pick up unless we are extremely busy. We don’t even have call waiting so we make sure every call goes through and is answered. It is hard though to answer calls and talk to concerned people for 5-10 minutes when you have hungry mouths to feed demanding food every 25 minutes! We could use some help. To answer calls, you do need some patience and have good communication skills. We will teach you the rest!

It is also hard to enter bird data into Wild-One, our entry system, while we are busy doing bird work. The system is pretty simple and the intake forms people fill out coincide with the program. Wild One also sent us this year definitions for some of the terms the program uses to better help.

We will train the person(s) that accept this job, but it does help to have some bird knowledge/experience. For more information about this position, or if you have interest, please email our clinic director Andrea Aiuto at birdcentermanager@gmail.com.

Need assistance for a large bird?

The Bird Center is now closed for the season. Over the winter we often get calls for injured geese, turkeys, raptors, or other large birds. Because the Center is not fully operating, our manager has time to help with these rescues and transport them to the rehab center that accepts them.

Often these rescues for waterfowl or raptors are difficult and we occasionally need assistance. We like to get photos and videos first and even check out the situation before attempting a rescue. We only want to intervene if truly needed. We’d like to assemble a small team for this, and we could use some volunteers to assist us during a scheduled rescue!

If you would like to be “on call” for a rescue mission, please email Shelley at birdteamvolunteer@gmail.com and she will get your info to our manager.
